Senator McCain to visit Egypt on Monday, February 20

Chairman of International Republican Institute - at centre of recent NGO crackdown - to meet with Egypt's military rulers on Monday

Ahram Online, Wednesday 15 Feb 2012

US Republican Senator John McCain is to visit Cairo on Monday. McCain heads a delegation that will meet the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, his deputy, Sami Anan, and other officials.
McCain is chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), which is among the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) targeted in a recent crackdown on civil society groups in Egypt. The action has seen a marked worsening in US-Egypt relations in recent weeks, which McCain aims to discuss during his visit.
Egyptian authorities have referred 43 civil society workers to court on charges of violating laws regulating the operation of NGOs in the country. Those facing charges include US, European and Egyptian nationals, among others, working for foreign and domestic NGOs.
