Dancing Diplomacy: American Troupes to Tour Again for State Department
By JULIE BLOOM
American
dance companies are once again heading overseas to practice a kind of
choreographed diplomacy as part of the second season of DanceMotion
USA. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the State
Department and the Brooklyn Academy of Music are to announce on
Wednesday plans for the international tours of the four American dance
companies taking part.
Under the direction of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton the program, according to a news release, “embraces the full use of diplomatic tools, in this case dance, to engage people and create opportunities for greater understanding.” This year’s companies include Rennie Harris Puremovement, which will tour Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian territories (March 9-April 6); Seán Curran Company, which will tour in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan (April 5-May 3); Jazz Tap Ensemble, which will tour in Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zimbabwe (April 9-May 7); and the Trey McIntyre Project, which will tour China, South Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam (May 5-June 3)
